ABOUT ZACK
Career professional with a passion for preserving and reestablishing natural ecosystems. Zack is accomplished in Natural Resource Management and Environmental Construction while specializing in reforestation, wetland restoration, stabilization, erosion and sediment controls, and Green Infrastructure practices.
Zack joined the Empire team full-time in 2017 after obtaining his Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from UMBC.

John is a career professional in the stream restoration construction business. His misfortune in a position not being renewed, soon became Empire’s fortunate hire! John has the demeanor, skills and experience that we could not pass on and he soon became a much-needed addition to our superintendent crew. Since then, he has gained valuable knowledge in how Empire runs as well as horticulturally which rounds out his experience to become a valued member of our project management team. We are excited to have him on the Empire team!

ABOUT LAURYN
Lauryn Gwathmey is an Assistant Project Manager at Empire, bringing a deep-rooted passion for environmental restoration and conservation. Her early experiences in gardening and community environmental outreach sparked a lifelong interest in understanding natural ecosystems. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from Albright College, where she developed a strong foundation in hydrology, ecology, and botany. Since graduating in 2019, Lauryn has gained diverse experience in the environmental sector, including roles in plant sales, environmental education, geo-technology engineering, and erosion and sediment control monitoring across Maryland. Since joining Empire in February 2024, Lauryn has become well-versed in the production side of environmental restoration. She is committed to upholding and enhancing the ecological health of the DC Metropolitan area, continuously growing as a key member of the project management team.

ABOUT PHIL
Phil found an opportunity at Empire and sold himself as a leader who brings people together for a common goal. A trait that has helped him tremendously in his transition to Empire. He is well versed in the aspects of many environmental restoration projects with a specialty in non-native invasive species removal and has proven to be a detail oriented and driven employee. Luis is our New Assistant Project Manger. He is a dedicated professional with a degree in Business Administration from the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC). With over two years of experience in payroll and accounting, he has honed his skills in financial management and compliance.
Luis is passionate about maintaining accuracy and integrity in his role, and takes pride in contributing to a transparent and compliant work environment.
As Luis grows in his career, he is committed to leveraging his expertise to support organizational goals and enhance operational efficiency.

Jenny Diaz
Assistant Project Manager
ABOUT JENNY
Jenny is our new Assistant Project Manager. After rediscovering her passion for nature and love of all thing’s plants, she returned to school through the horticulture program at our local community college.
Jenny made a career transition after four years of experience as a rehabilitation coordinator and site administrator in the mental health field. She gradually stepped into the green industry, first as a nursery assistant, then as a plant health care specialist, and now as an APM—bringing her newly developed horticultural knowledge, strong communication abilities, and excellent people skills to Empire.
Jenny is set to graduate this spring from Montgomery College with an Associate Degree in Horticulture and is excited to continue growing her career in environmental construction with our team.

Steven McCauley

ABOUT STEVE
Steven has been working in the Environmental Restoration industry for 10 years. He joined the Empire team in 2015 as a laborer and has worked his way up to Foreman and now Project Superintendent. His love for the outdoors and passion for the environment make him an excellent fit for Empire. Steven is a friendly, knowledgeable, and honest person who knows how to communicate with crews, clients, and contractors to make sure the job is done safely and per the specifications. With his positive, hardworking attitude, Steven continues to grow and develop his skills every day.

Coming from over 20 years of in field experience in landscaping and construction with an extensive background in heavy equipment operation, it made sense to take an opportunity to channel those skills into field managing environmental restoration and construction projects. Back after a 6-year hiatus to be a full time dad, David strives to deliver top quality work that meets and exceeds project owner and general contractor expectations. A team player who is constantly expanding his knowledge in horticultural and environmental construction, David enjoys being a father and the great outdoors

With over 15 years of experience working with trees, shrubs, and plants, Rob brings a strong background in horticulture, product knowledge, and leadership to our team. After serving as our Nursery Foreman, Rob has now taken on the role of Purchaser, where he takes the lead on sourcing materials, working with vendors, managing purchasing needs, and helping ensure our crews have the materials they need. Now in his second stint with the company, Rob is career-driven and brings a hands-on approach to his work. His experience in the nursery, knowledge of plants and materials, and understanding of the landscape industry make him a valuable part of our team and an important part of supporting our continued growth.

Crystal Western

ABOUT CRYSTAL
Crystal joined Empire in 2025 and was promoted to Nursery Foreman after her first year with the company. She brings 23 years of experience as a Veterinary Technician, along with a strong passion for plants, gardening, and horticulture.
Her love of plants started with her father, who was always gardening and planting. Since entering the landscaping industry, Crystal has enjoyed expanding her knowledge of plants and learning more about horticulture.
She is currently working toward her Plant Health Care Technician certification and plans to continue developing her skills through additional training and certifications. Outside of work, she enjoys caring for her houseplants, gardening, and getting her hands in the dirt.
